Effects of Isolation
Social Wellness is so important because isolation can have a serious effect on your health and wellness. Studies have shown that those who are socially isolated have a shorter life span than those who are socially active. The studies also show that social isolation has as much of an impact on your health as smoking, high blood pressure, and obesity. Social isolation comes with underlying affects that impact your cardiovascular health, inflammation, hormones, sleep, and emotions (Singer, 2018). That is why finding Social Wellness is a critical part of the 8 Dimensions of Wellness.
"Not all who are isolated are lonely and not all who are lonely are isolated." - Clifford Singer, MD
How to Get More Connected
Distance Yourself From Social Media
Contrary to popular belief, one of the most effective ways to get more social interaction is to distance yourself from social media. Social media has a very negative effect on your Social Wellness. It give you a false sense of reality. You either see people putting up a false front of happiness and success or you see negative news that 9 times out of 10 is false information. The best way to improve your Social Wellness is to use the old fashion ways to connect, either face-to-face or calling someone.
